In the late 1950's Dr C.K. O'Doherty travelled to London to train in new techniques that had become available - joint injection and manipulation under Dr James Cyriax as there were no equivalent courses available in Ireland at the time. While pursuing a keen interest in the various techniques he became a founder member of the Irish Orthopaedic Society, with the intention of helping other doctors and physiotherapists to advance in the treatment of musculoskeletal and opthopaedic medicine. He practiced orthopaedic medicine extensively for many years until he retired from practice.
His son Dr Michael O'Doherty has studied orthopaedic medicine since 1978 and has completed many courses both nationally and internationally on various techniques. Dr Michael has practiced in Gorey since 1979 and is well versed on injection techniques and the prognosis and courses of treatment that lead to the best results in musculoskeletal injury. While continuing to practice he also teaches other doctors and physiotherapists and lectures on courses given by the Irish Orthopaedic Society on the various techniques. He has also taught injection techniques on sports injury courses in Trinity College.
